The Mad Black Woman Show 1 + 2
The Mad Black Woman Show stemmed from the 2024’s performance of black bird. Initially, I created black bird as a short film of me enacting a public performance.
Due to financial limitations, I wasn’t able to obtain the materials for this film which led to me wanting to expand the film black bird into a live performance. The name The Mad Black Woman Show, is one I’ve been thinking of for a while. I made signage to reflect the title and the live performance that was soon to come.During the Millbank show in February, I did 3 10 minute sets with improv movement and used signage as props.
The public performance became the set for my live performance at Millbank in February 2024. Originally, I planned to showcase a new work at Millbank titled “My Lord, Technology”
For the second act of The Mad Black Woman show, I altered a few things. First, I had more time to prepare. The second act of The Mad Black Woman show was showcased at the gallery concluding my residency for the Transmissions project.
This collaborative project was in conjunction with OCADU students. We met as a group weekly to discuss our works and plan for a group project. We agreed on themes of distance/connection and water. Originally, I had an idea to design propaganda posters centered around Zionism and White Supremacy. My inspiration was to explore the transmission of ideas and views.
This show included improv movements and a loose script for me playing 3 characters. To support the performance, I made a video introducing the show and its themes. One challenged I’ve struggled to master is projecting the sound from inside the glass booth. I enjoy this glass box because it mimics a cage, but I have to find a work around for sound during the performance as opposed to the film screening by itself.
After discussing with my tutor, Max Dovey and a my peers, I decided to go with a less antagonizing piece. Once again, I had an opportunity to hone in on performance. I presented The Mad Black Woman Show at Millbank in May 2025.
For this edition, I only did one 10-minute performance. I noticed the last show that people really enjoyed the first one and the crowd fizzled out towards the last two.
The Mad Black Woman Show was my work for the London part of the Transmission residency. For Toronto, we had a task of making work for a space I’d never been in before. We also had to be mindful of size, light, and that this gallery is open to the public. I was a bit unsure about doing a performance there and focused more closely on a collaborative piece for our group. We decided on a group tapestry with each of us contributing a textile.
The Things We Leave Behind
Two weeks before the show, we decided to switch gears due to space limitations at Stackt Market (Toronto). I already had materials for my textile and decided to continue to work on it.
I used materials from Toronto and London to make the piece.
Flowers (Streets of Toronto)
Sainsbury Bag (Transported from London)
Shower Curtain (Transported from London)
Yarn (Transported from London)
Green Bag (Streets of Toronto)
Fabric (Fabric shop in Toronto)
Veil Card Game
I decided to join the NowPlay project half way through its 6-week duration. I had the pleasure of joining a team with an interesting concept about power dynamics and the supernatural. I figured these themes resonated with my research into the occult in Unit 1.
For this project, I designed the game instructions and game logic model.
Unfortunately, the alternative game logic model had to be used due to time.
Cover Mock-ups for Avarice
For the installation of this piece, I wanted it to mimic a shower curtain on a rod, which was a bit challenging without being able to hang materials from the ceiling.
Short video of game play at Somerset House
I also included a book design I did for a friend of mines writing. I did 22 illustrations to coincide with themes of the writer’s poems and short stories.
I designed the cover.
And the book layout.
I also aided in card design, proposing cover ideas
I landed on doing graphic design and story prompts for (10) cards storylines.
I enjoyed this project but ran into time barriers with me being 13 hours ahead in Japan and being unable to make the installation in person at Somerset House.
